We have a new project underway that we are excited to be a part of. So what is it you may be wondering? Let’s Talk Sunflowers!

As you may know we support Rossendale Civic Pride and all of the amazing things that they do for the area and this year their theme is Sunflowers, Slippers and Sparrows! To show our support we are teaming up with Hazelwood Homecare, Newtons of Bury and Newtons Estate to grow our own sunflowers and encourage you to do the same!

We will be sending out sunflower seeds to all of our service users, staff members and tenants to show our support for Civic Pride and all of their hard work and to encourage you all to get involved in growing your sunflowers as tall as you can!

Think you can grow the tallest sunflower? We want to see! Enter into our sunflower growing competition and be in with a chance to win a prize for growing the tallest one. Simply send your pictures with your sunflower next to a tape measure to Ashlea@newtonscowo.com to enter.

What Do You Need To Do?

It’s simple really. We want you to grow the best sunflower you can! Check out our sunflower steps below:

Who Are Civic Pride?

Civic Pride Rossendale are a voluntary run organization that are passionate about helping Rossendale live up to it’s true potential in being a wonderful place to live and work. In their own words:

“We’re a band of volunteers determined to make the town in which we live, a better place to live and work. None of this would be possible without the help both in time and money given so freely by our volunteers.”

Civic Pride groups exist all around different areas and showing support to these dedicated local teams is so important.

Advantages Of Gardening

Studies have shown that the advantages of gardening are broad and diverse. Research studies have shown how gardening can be linked to significant reductions in depression and anxiety and improved social functioning. It can also help to maintain independence and prevent cognitive decline.

It is also a way to get creative and watch something you have nurtured from a seed grow into something beautiful (or edible depending on what you’ve planted!) It’s also a great way to stay active and get yourself some fresh air.

Important Sunflower Information

Sunflowers are easy to grow from seed and are ideal for growing with children. They can grow to heights of up to two meters, bear impressive, long-lasting flowers, and look fantastic in gardens and allotments!

Sunflowers are an annual plant that will flower in August and so they are mainly sown from mid April to the end of May. You should be able to plant sunflowers as late as July as varieties require a 50-60 day growing season. Sunflowers need sun. They do best in fertile soil in a sheltered spot, but will also do well in containers. However, if you want your sunflower to grow really tall, it’s best to plant it in the ground.
