On January 29th, we are going to be celebrating National Puzzle Day! At Lifestyle Homecare, we believe that Puzzles are a great way to keep your brain healthy and active as you age.

Whether it’s a jigsaw puzzle or your daily Wordless, it has been scientifically proven that adding an extra few minutes of puzzles or brain games to your daily routine can improve your memory and cognitive performance! So why not take part this National Puzzle Day?

In the times of the Ancient Egyptians, the first puzzle was created. They created a labyrinth drawing puzzle, and the first jigsaw puzzle was created by John Spilsbury in 1767.

In the past, we have mentioned how great brain games are not only for cognitive benefits but also for your mental health too. We recommend dedicating a chunk of time during the day to encourage your patient to participate in some puzzles and brain stimulation activities.

There are hundreds of different puzzles available whether it’s online or a physical activity. Let’s take a look at some examples to give you some inspiration:

Bingo

A fun and interactive game that you can play with your patient or if they have guests coming over! This game will help them in three ways hearing the numbers being called, using their sense of touch by holding their pen to dab the cards, and seeing the game cards.

Sudoku

Sudoku is a fantastic example of a good-quality brain puzzle. Perfect for people of all ages and abilities, this game involves problem-solving and scouting for patterns within the game. These can be completed on an iPad app or in puzzle books that you can buy from the supermarket.

Chess

A commonly overlooked game that is perfect for brain health is chess! Chess has been around for centuries but it’s still just as beneficial. It not only gets your patient’s mind focusing, but it can also help improve memory.

Spending some quality time with your patient can help with their mental and physical health, so something as simple as puzzles can make a huge and positive difference to their daily routine.
