Being a carer is about more than just a job, at its core it is about people. It is such an important sector that takes a lot of dedication and patience but in return is one of the most rewarding jobs there is. Spending your time caring for other people is special and so if you are considering a career in care and are unsure where to start or what to expect, we are here to help you through the process! Here are some things to consider when thinking about a career in care.

It’s about people

It may seem obvious but, being a carer is all about people and it is such a heart warming and rewarding job. There is nothing like being able to be there for someone who may not have anyone else throughout the day. It is a feeling that few other job roles can offer. Being a people person is such a big part of the job and enjoying the time you spend with clients is so important.

Forging relationships with the clients is a huge part of the job, getting to know the individual needs and interests of each client is the best way to ensure the care they receive is best suited to them and knowing what they need makes it much easier for you.

Location, Location, Location

Being a carer is a wonderful job for people who do not want to be crammed into an office every day staring at a screen. It is a job that allows you to get out and about into the world everyday and no two days are the same! There is always something going on. A career in care allows you to travel to different areas you may not have been to before and just generally have the freedom to get out and about daily.

If you do not drive, fear not! Although a lot of the routes may require a car, there are a few walking routes that can be taken up, and as a company we also actively encourage cycling.

Watch Out Gordon Ramsay

As a carer, the kinds of tasks required vary from client to client and our main goal is to make sure that everything we do is tailored to the individual. This means that some people may need a higher level of care than others and so the skills needed can vary.

From making a killer cup of tea and giving Gordon Ramsay a run for his money all the way to personal care and administering medication, there are a vast number of things that are needed throughout the day. We do give any and all training that is needed so don’t worry if the more detailed areas aren’t yet something you are comfortable with.

It can be emotionally demanding

To be frank, being a carer can be an emotionally demanding experience, both positive and negative. It is an incredible job that revolves around helping other people all day everyday. In turn, this can sometimes be very emotional and having people be reliant on you to get through the day is something that can’t be taken too lightly.

However, being aware that this is a factor of the job is an important part of being able to handle the emotional side of the job. Plus as mentioned, these emotional moments are also a lot of the time positive. But, it is important too that you do talk to others about how you are feeling should it start to have an impact on your mental space.

Communication

A chit chat a day keeps the doctor away! To be a good carer you have to be a good communicator. Not only are you having a chit chat with your clients and maybe sometimes their loved ones, but you are also in charge of helping them do tasks such as booking appointments. It is essential that you are able to communicate openly and clearly with people and in return I can guarantee you will meet some of the most fascinating people and hear some of the stories they have to tell!

A career in care is such an incredibly important job. It requires dedication to both the people you are helping and the job itself and so taking the time to consider if it is the role for you can be an important step.
